On the 18th February last, Major Burn and myself had the honor of addressing you, conveying a request that the lot of land formerly held by Messrs Diron, Gray, & Co., and adjoining the lot at present occupied by Messrs Macvicar & Co., might be assigned to the Hongkong and Canton Steam Packet Company.
Your letter No. 52 of 19th February, intimated to us that Sir John Davis had been induced for the reasons then stated to accede to our request, and had fixed upon the lots No. 29-30, formerly belonging to Mr. Carter.
These were selected instead of the one applied for, in consequence, we believe, of our having stated verbally at the time, our apprehension
